Tips You Must Read Before Eloping at San Francisco City Hall

From a photographer who’s there all the time (and knows the best spots + secrets).

Here’s the exact list I send to all my clients before their San Francisco City Hall elopement. Whether you’ve been planning for months or just starting out, these tips will help make the day smooth, fun, and extra special.

Park in the Right Spot

There’s an underground parking garage directly under Civic Center Plaza. It’s the safest (avoid car theft!) and most convenient option, with plenty of spaces available.

City Hall Is Surprisingly Hot

Even in winter, it gets warm inside of San Francisco City Hall. Bring a small fan, some cold water, or a handkerchief to stay comfortable, especially if you’re wearing layers or a suit.

You Can Ask for a Unique Ceremony Spot

Most ceremonies happen at the rotunda, but sometimes the officiant will allow you to use other beautiful locations like the 3rd or 4th floor hallways. You have to ask, but it never hurts to try! It works especially if you have a time slot at the end of the day, around 3:30 PM.

Pro Tip: Hold Hands and Look at Each Other

It’s easy to focus on the officiant since they are the one talking to you, but trust me, holding hands and locking eyes with your partner during the ceremony makes it feel way more intimate and emotional (and looks better in photos, too).

Prep Your Group Ahead of Time

Let your family or friends know what to do while we’re off taking portraits. Will they wait inside? Head to a second location? Also, be sure to keep your phone and keys on you if you’ll need them.

Bring a Helping Hand (Optional!)

Having one person follow us can be helpful to carry your things, assist with your bouquet, or fluff your veil. But if it’s just the two of you, I’ve got it covered. I’ll happily carry your bag and help with everything.

Prioritize Your Favorite Photo Spots

City Hall gets busy fast. Make a plan to hit your must-have locations first. Popular favorites include:

  • The 4th floor hallway

  • The grand staircase

  • The art deco windows

  • The elevator

  • Outside the building

Browse my galleries, Pinterest boards, or Google for inspiration if you’re not sure what you love yet.

Send a Mood Board (Optional, But Fun!)

If you have pose inspo, a vibe you’re going for, or any detail shots you want to make sure I capture, feel free to send me a mood board! I’ll keep it handy on the day and make sure we hit the moments that matter to you.

If you're planning your City Hall elopement and want a photographer who knows the ins and outs (and loves capturing all the little moments), I’d be so excited to be part of it. Reach out

and let’s start dreaming up your perfect day together!
